the undercut
With every defining moment in a girl’s life comes a terrible hair decision. To combat the deep “regret”, I will admit that shaving my head in some form has always been on my bucket list. This past July I took that jump. I have thick curly hair and it gets quite hot during the summer in Oklahoma so I thought this would resolve my problem instead of thinning out the crown like I normally do. Not to mention, my stylist for the last few years quit doing hair with no notice so I did not have someone of sound hair-mind to stop me. Naturally, during a low mental state, I was scrolling on Pinterest and screenshot some pictures, booked an appointment at a new salon, and went in with some badass lady confidence. I showed the stylist the picture and she went to work. I expected the purple-haired undercut you saw but when I felt the razor closer to my ear my stomach dropped. She turned me around to show me the finished look and it was not what I expected but, that happens. It felt great though with it being so hot outside. The stylist told me to return in 2-3 weeks for a shape up, but I have been growing it out ever since.
Here is what I had:
There’s something about having red hair that even though it is unique and fun, you ultimately want to change it. This is a complex from elementary school, I promise I have worked through it already ha! I have tried dying it blonde and black but the dye just washes right out. It will only dye different shades of darker red. I have tried bobs, long cuts, and shags. Shaving an undercut was the farthest I would go which ended up teaching me that I just need to leave it alone.
I have seen this cut around lately and I must admit, there are some girls that this is their look and they rock it. It is not for me though. I equate it to my moments of cutting my own bangs.
There is a lesson to be learned here, do not cut your hair when you are depressed. Don’t worry though, it will not be my last bad hair decision so stick around.
Wait, how am I getting it to grow out you ask? I have googled this question so many times since the week post-shave. The answer is simple, there is absolutely nothing that you can do to make it grow out instantly. You can however just take care of your hair and generate as much patience as you can. While it was still less than about an inch I was able to use scarves tied around to hide the growth when my hair wasn’t down. It’s about 2 inches now which means scarves are work. You cannot be a productive girl boss in cubicle land if you are fixing your hair from poking out of a scarf multiple times in a day. Luckily, my pony is long and thick enough that it covers the growth so I am dealing with it that way. I am currently weighing the option of cutting my hair to a lob in a few months to start the process of evening it out.
Much love,
B
