the undercut pt. ii

As you all know, I have been growing out an undercut since July 2019. It was an on a whim cut that I thought would help with the thickness of my hair around my crown but just became more of a hassle than anything else. Granted, it took out that thickness but as my hair grew longer I found that my pony was quite thin and I struggled to hide the growth. Of course, as I said in part one, I did extensive googling and there were cute ways to hide it but none were practical for my work requirements.

When I was not wearing my hair down, I had to hide the length in some way. A majority of the time that involved pinning it up with bobby pins. That was easy enough but even then my hair has a mind of its own and would wiggle itself loose and fall. If my hair would behave or I knew that it was going to escape its metal entrapment I would have taken the time to make them cute tendrils but of course, I only think of this as I am typing this.

I visited a wonderful hair goddess (@paintedbyhannah) in November begging for a release from this undercut. She was wonderful enough to come up with a hair plan for me over the next year. She told me to come back in a few months and we’d go through with the bob I was crying for. She took this picture of the progress from July 2019 to February 2020. I left with a perfect bob just an inch longer than the growth. I will go back after a couple of months and even it out.

During my panicked googling I read that it takes years to grow out your undercut; however, it appears that it will have only taken me a year to get it grown back out. So, the real reason I am writing about this is this: how the heck did I get here in a year? It is as simple as this…

  1. I took my multi-vitamins daily.

  2. I stopped incessantly blow-drying and straightening my hair. The damage I was giving it was causing it to not grow healthy and the goal was to let it grow and not have to get it trimmed shorter when I did seek that cut.

  3. I strayed from the low pony keeping it out of ties to cause break-offs.

  4. (not sure this one was a part of it) I drank more water as a part of a challenge to myself.

  5. I only wash my hair every 2-3 days.

  6. Air dry, air dry, air dry.

  7. I did not put shampoo or conditioner directly on the growth, rather just let the top lather down.

  8. Leave in conditioner afterward!

And lastly, here is my bob given my hair goddess @paintedbyhannah!
